About Terman

Terman AI is named in honor of Frederick Emmons Terman (1900-1982), widely recognized as the “Father of Silicon Valley.”

As a Stanford University professor and later Dean of Engineering and Provost, Terman transformed the relationship between academia and industry. He encouraged his students, including William Hewlett and David Packard, to start their own companies in the area—laying the foundation for what would become the world's most influential technology hub.

Terman's vision was revolutionary: he believed that universities should actively collaborate with industry to drive innovation. He established Stanford Industrial Park (now Stanford Research Park), creating a model for university-industry partnerships that has been replicated worldwide.

His legacy extends beyond entrepreneurship. During World War II, Terman led the Radio Research Laboratory at Harvard, developing electronic countermeasures that proved crucial to the Allied victory. His work exemplified how academic research could address real-world challenges at scale.

“The secret is to create an environment where talented people want to be, where they can do important work, and where they have the freedom to pursue their ideas.”

— Frederick Terman
